They look so cool and they're really cheap for an airplane! You don't even have to put jet fuel in them!

God yes.

I'd love to have a personal helicopter.

I would not consider "cheap" a quality I would look for in a device which is going to carry me at 5,000 feet above the ground at 120mph.

I go to a college that has a VERY big agricultural program. We also have a landing strip for the cropduster. Would be very tempted to fly my plane to school! lol Though helicopter sounds much more practical.

To be fair these things go through tons of inspections before they even leave the ground. You would probably be fine....probably. If not invest in a good parachute.

They till take special fuel, 100LL.

The 150 is a good airplane.

I would fly this to work every day (I work 60 miles away)

Only if the owner takes good care of it...

Older planes aren't nearly as scrutinized for safety as new.

what about 100ft above the ground at 60mph?

I would probably be okay going up in a plane like this, but only under good weather conditions and for a short flight. The damn thing has less power than a Toyota Tercel.

As a toy, like an aerial go-cart, maybe.

As a mode of transportation?

"Cheap," in this case, is about as much as a brand new Focus ST. We're not talking about slipping the surly bonds of Earth in a $500 Craigslist wonder.

I suppose. But I would still prefer a plane with a bit of power. Ya know, just in case. Obviously, 100hp works just fine for this aircraft, but if I were buying a plane, I'd want something more substantial.

I have no idea. In case I want to do some spirited flying.

Like this?

You're not going to be doing that in a 150 anyway. The FAA certified that airframe in the Utility category. To do any "spirited flying" you'd need something in the acrobatic category, and those aren't cheap. Even the 152 Aerobat is relatively expensive. No barrel rolls for you.

It's very tempting, as long as the plane isn't clapped out and in need of an overhaul. Every 1800 hours or so, it has to be overhauled, which can easily reach $15-$16 grand...nearing the price of the plane itself. Also, another good way for a college kid like yourself to get into aviation is soaring. IMO that's one of the best and cheapest ways to give yourself a solid foundation for flying. Plus, you don't have to put ANY fuel in a glider!

Not like that. Not stunts. But if I wanted to fly a little faster than 120, or carry a few friends, or have a really long range. For me, the 150 is just a little...dinky.If I were going for a prop plane, I'd go for something like this:

The 500hp, 300mph Piper Meridian. Notice I am not saying, "Anyone who likes or wants a 150 is dumb and should just go spend 100x more on a Meridian". But I personally have no feelings about the 150. If I had $30,000, I would not spend it on a 150. If I had $2,000,000, I might buy a Meridian because I like it. But since I have neither $30,000 nor $2,000,000, this is just hypothetical.

Well...since we're going into Piper Meridian territory.

If you have $2 mil to spend on a new plane you have $4.5 mil for a new HondaJet.

You'd be surprised what they don't go through. My Uncle is an aircraft mechanic and he has told some scary stories. Like one guy in a Piper Cherokee landing at the airport where he works, complaining about it not running right. It was running on 2 quarts of oil. He didn't know it used oil.

Why not? Its like driving a gocart to work... Only you're flying, don't have to have a license or even register it!

There is also a 172 wasting away in the Hangar next to the runway by his house. He let a guy keep it there for a few years, the guy never used it, gave it to my uncle who had a tornado damaged donor 172 with a new engine, then the guys son decided he wanted and took it back because he had the title after the plane had already been stripped, and it has been sitting for 2 years since then untouched. My Uncle is still pissed, but I don't understand why he doesn't just claim it as abandoned.

True. I wasn't even gonna start in, but of course I would rather have a private jet than a prop plane. The Meridian is just my first choice for non-jets. However, if you have $4.5 million to spend on a HondaJet, you have an additional $60 million to upgrade to a nice little Gulfstream G650.

I am not so afraid of flying something one of those that I wouldn't try it out, but if the 150 isn't substantial enough for me, that thing ain't gonna cut it. Same reason I wouldn't own a motorcycle.
